Head coach, Stephen Bradley, spoke to shamrockrovers.ie about the signing:
We’ve signed Callum Honohan from Cork City. What was the process that led to his joining Rovers?
“Since we signed his older brother Josh, Callum is one we’ve watched quite closely. Being Josh’s younger brother he’s one we came across and Callum has really good attributes. So we’re looking forward to getting Callum in, working with him and seeing him in that environment. Hopefully we can develop that potential.”
What are Callum’s attributes as a player and where do you see his playing position?
“Callum can play any of the back three positions. He’s quite similar to Egor Vassenin (who signed last week), Callum is one we felt was important to get in the building and work with. His age profile means he’s definitely one for the future and, as I said, he can play any of the back positions. We won’t quite know which one until we work with Callum in real detail and we’ll make that decision.”
Obviously comparisons will be made with his older brother Josh who has taken his game to a really high level since joining Rovers in 2024. Can that act as extra motivation to Callum to try and emulate Josh’s trajectory?
“You would hope so. Callum will be his own man and he’ll write his own story. But you’d hope he’d look at Josh and the strides he has taken since he came here and want to do similar. That’s the aim, and I know Callum has the hunger to do that and now it’s our job to try and give him the tools to make that happen.”
Is Callum similar in a way to Egor Vassenin who we saw appearing in last week’s friendly against Glenavon in terms of being a signing with potential and a slightly longer term option?
“I think if you had to put Egor and Callum in the team tomorrow, you’d have no questions on both, but again it’s always something for which we have to keep planning, for the future of the team and the club. Both are players with real potential and, as I said last week about Egor, you’re learning from the best three centre backs in the country. We’ve seen the benefits of that with Cory O’Sullivan. So, that can only benefit Egor and Callum, to be in and learning from the top players in the country. They are both for the now if needed, but definitely for the future.”
