Academy Stars: Mia Murtagh
Firstly Mia, can you give us some information about yourself?
I’m from Longford, from Keena, it’s a small village. I joined Rovers for the first time at the Super Cup in 2023 and that was my first time playing for Rovers over the course of the week. I just decided to sign then.
The Women’s Under 17s recently had a great success in winning the Super Cup NI. What do you remember about the first game against Manchester United?
Oh, it was a brilliant game. I just remember the first two goals and we thought we were through, but they came back and just the final goal from Matilda (Stelmaszek) was really good. The crowd was going mad and, yeah, the celebrations were very good in the dressing room after.
The team fell behind Northern Ireland at Monkstown but kept their composure to win 2-1. What are your views on that game?
I think it was a hard game. They were very physical and they were tight to us, like they were really up for the game. And yeah, we just did really well to come back again and just never gave up.
Having overcome North East Rush (USA) the squad then returned to Ballyclare Comrades’ stadium for the final against Brighton. What can you tell us about the day of the final?
Oh, some day. It was an evening game, so a big build -up. We just sat around the hotel, went for a few walks and just before that then just getting the heads right in, you know, the warm -up was really going and, you know, we went 2 -0 down, but we came back really well in the end; we just used our strengths really well in the second half. Yeah, the celebrations after were very good in the dressing room. Lots of videos of these.
In the hours leading up to the match were some of the girls excited and others maybe nervous?
I think more excitement because you know it was a big deal for a lot of the girls and it was kind of the first major final that we’ve had together, and you know it’s good experience because the League Cup final will be coming up now, so a few nerves but more excitement than nothing else.
Rovers went two behind to Brighton but came back to win 3-2. What thoughts were going through your head at various stages of the game?
I think it was just to never give up as well because you know we’ve been in that situation a couple of times before and just to keep going. We came in at half time, reset and made a few changes and really transformed then in the second half.
The celebrations on the pitch afterwards were something else as you mentioned there. Have you ever experienced anything like that before?
No, not really. Oh, just no better feeling. It was really good and especially being captain. It was so good to see the girls so happy and yeah, just overwhelmed.
Do you think the five days the squad spent together up north has helped bonding even better than what it was before?
Yeah, definitely. It was such a good experience. We went to the cinema, we went shopping, we went everywhere. It was just a really good experience and it brought us all a lot closer because we were a big squad and there was a lot of new signings at the start of the year, but that really brought us together and it’s proven in the past couple of weeks.
Was the tournament everything you anticipated or more?
Yeah, way more. We went into it as kind of thinking we’ll give all these teams a good go and like everyone was just so excited to be playing the big names; it was just such a good experience, it was really good to get closer to the girls and even better to win it.
You did a fine job in captaining the squad; did it take you long to come back down to earth again?
No, not really. I wouldn’t be too cocky. I’d just get humble straight away again, because we still had a lot of hard league games coming up and just to focus back on them. We enjoyed it while we won, but, you know, we had to get back to reality fairly quick.
You were interviewed on the pitch after the final and you were so calm.
I just had to settle down. I was so hyper before, but just settled down. I knew it would be going somewhere, so thought I’d better get myself right.
Your team is flying in both the league and cup. Can you give us a brief account of both?
Yeah, a few weeks ago, we beat Athlone in the Cup semi -final. It was a really hard game. It went to extra time and penalties. We came back in extra time to draw two-all and then penalties, we came out well. So that’s going really good, the final is against Cork now. Then in the league we beat Bohs 4-0 on Saturday and we’re back with Treaty in Limerick which is our next game.
Do you get to watch much Women’s football yourself?
Yeah, every time I have a chance I try and stick on the telly and you know if it’s on anything just keep watching.
Do you think the women’s game is getting better in Ireland
Definitely, like a lot of even the younger girls are coming up and really putting their stamp on things and you know it’s really good to see it but it’s definitely improving, even the standard is getting really good, so yeah, really interesting.
