Rory Gaffney has called time on his playing career, bringing an end to an incredibly successful spell at Shamrock Rovers. The 36-year-old striker was a key player in the Hoops’ trophy wins during his time at the club – scoring 50 goals across the league, FAI Cup and Europe.
His brace of goals in last season’s FAI Cup final, in what turned out to be his final domestic game in the green and white hoops of Shamrock Rovers, secured Rovers’ first double since the final season in Milltown in 1987.
The Tuam native began his League of Ireland career with Mervue United before a spell with Limerick earned him a move to the UK. He played with Cambridge United, Bristol Rovers (on loan), Salford City and Walsall (on loan) before returning to Ireland to join the Hoops for a trophy laden conclusion to his career.
After an injury-hit and Covid-truncated season with the Hoops in 2020, his eight league goals the following year helped them to the title in a season when Gaffney was named in the PFAI Premier Division team of the year.
He had an outstanding 2022 campaign, domestically and in Europe. His 10 league goals helped the Hoops secure their third league title in a row, in a year when he finished as the club’s top goalscorer (with 15 in all competitions) and won the club’s player of the year award. He was also named SSE Airtricity League Player of the Year, voted into the team of the year by his peers across the league and named the overall PFAI Players’ Player of the Year.
Rory scored away against Shkupi in the second leg of Rovers’ UEFA Europa League third qualifying round tie, a win which ultimately secured group stage football for the club in the 2022 UEFA Europa Conference League. His injury-time winner against Shelbourne in Tallaght in early October was a massive moment in the title race, as the club won their 20th league title.
The following season he scored eight league goals as Rovers won only the second ever four-in-row in League of Ireland history. Injury curtailed his 2024 campaign, when he made only eight league appearances as Rovers finished runners up.
He showed great resolve in getting back to full fitness for the 2025 campaign and his goals propelled Rovers to yet another title - his fifth - as Rovers also made it back to the league phase of the UEFA Conference League.
Overall, he scored 37 league goals for the club in 143 games. Only five Rovers players have scored more league goals in the Tallaght era: Graham Burke, Gary Twigg, Aaron Greene, Ronan Finn and Gary McCabe. Across his time at Rovers, Gaffney scored eight European goals, leaving him fifth in the all-time list of League of Ireland goalscorers in Europe.
He leaves the club as a firm fans’ favourite - a player who supporters will remember for leading the line for the Hoops with strength, speed and guile and a striker who has left a lasting trophy laden legacy at Shamrock Rovers.
I want to take a moment to say thank you to everyone at Shamrock Rovers as I announce my retirement. Being part of this dressing room since 2020 has been a true highlight of my career. From the domestic successes to the European nights under the lights at Tallaght, I'm incredibly grateful for having the privilege to wear the jersey. Thank you to the club, the staff, and my teammates for being able to play a part in such a successful era which I hope will continue. A special mention to the fans as well—your support has been brilliant from day one. I’ll always look back on my time here with great pride, and I look forward to supporting the lads from the stands.
