It is with profound sadness that we are announcing the death of our former player Jacko McDonagh.
Jacko played on the four-in-a-row team at Milltown in 1983/84 and 1984/85, the latter season having won the league and FAI Cup double. From Donnybrook, he joined Rovers during the summer of 1982 having previously made his senior debut in the League of Ireland with Bohemians. Before joining the Dalymount Park club Jacko played for the Shelbourne youth team.
A tall and polished centre half, Jacko was capped at senior level three times for the Republic of Ireland under the managership of Eoin Hand. At the end of the 1984/85 season he departed Milltown to join French side Nîmes Olympique and later on also played for Belgian side KSV Waregem.
In addition to winning league and FAI Cup honours, Jacko was also on the Hoops team that beat Dundalk in the Dublin City Cup final played at Dalymount Park in September, 1983 – the first piece of silverware won during the Jim McLaughlin era.
At 64, Jacko is the first of the Hoops’ 1980s four-in-a-row team to pass away.
