We had another important win in the league on Monday night with a 2-1 victory away to Waterford. Did you think we deserved the victory despite a late Waterford goal to give them some hope?
“I think we did. I thought we were very good, other than conceding the late goal. I didn’t think Waterford caused us too many problems. It’s a difficult place to go and play there, they’re fighting for every point. Off the back of Friday, travelling to Cork, conceding a late goal in Cork, when you put all of that in the mix, I thought we played well and deserved to win.”
Our two goals on Monday night from Josh Honohan and Matt Healy were different, but well worked and finished, particularly Matt’s goal to make it 2-0.
“Two good goals. A set play with the first and then Matt’s goal was very well worked. I said it at the start of the year when Matt scored his first goal for us, that he can score goals from that position. He has the quality from both sides. He showed that on Monday night with a left footed curler into the far corner. Matt’s been brilliant for us, the best in the country this season and he’s getting better and better.”
You made four changes to the starting lineup against Waterford and those four players who came in and the subs made in the game all contributed. Their readiness to step in and step up remains extremely impressive.
“It’s really important and we keep saying it. You look at our fixture list, from Cork last Friday until the end of the season on 18th December, there’s no let-up, it’s full-on. That’s what we want but it means everyone has to be ready, which is great. We have Connor Malley and young Max Kovalevskis back and Michael Noonan also, so it just adds more competition for places and everyone will play their part at some point. They just need to be ready to go.”
Our last Dublin Derby against Bohs ensures nobody is looking to next week’s trip to Prague for the Conference League opener against Sparta. Does this Bohs game look after itself?
“Yes it does. I think the first two games against Bohs, we’ve been very good and should’ve won those games but we didn’t. In the third game, we were poor and were deservedly beaten. We know where we’ve been good, we know where we’ve been poor and we know what we need to do to win the game tomorrow. But there’s no need to hype this game up, they’re big games and we’re looking forward to it.”
Bohs have been a bit of a bogey team this season, accounting for three of our four league defeats this season. Is the bigger picture at this stage of the season just to keep the momentum going towards the league title regardless of the opposition or previous results against Bohs?
“It’s our job not to just look at results, whether we win, lose or draw, it’s to look at our performance and the key indicators within that. As I said above, the first two games we were very good and should’ve won those, but we didn’t and at the end of the day, football is about winning and losing. But the bigger picture for us is that we’re very close to winning the league and we just need to stay focussed on that task and if we do that, we’ll be fine.”
John McGovern hobbled off late in the game in Waterford, how is he and who is unavailable for the Bohs game?
“John is fine. He got a bad kick on Monday, but it’s settled down in the last few days. Michael Noonan is back (after concussion last week), he was cleared on Tuesday morning and as I said, Connor Malley and Max Kovalevskis are also back, so the squad is in a good place.”
