IT’S ALL TO PLAY FOR AS HOOPS BEAT UCD

Shamrock Rovers 3 (Purdy, C. Kavanagh, Hanrahan)

UCD 1

FAI Airtricity Under 19 League Southern Division

Tuesday, 24th March, 2015

At Tallaght Stadium

It’s all to play for as the final series of games in the league phases of the FAI Airtricity U19 League are due to be played this coming weekend. While Waterford and Limerick FC are assured of their places in the quarter finals it is impossible to predict just which other two from Cobh, Rovers, UCD and Cork City will join them. The Hoops will entertain Mervue on Saturday at Tallaght Stadium and simply must win this game. A win here would not guarantee them anything though; they would have to wait and see what happens elsewhere. Cobh will host Limerick in what is sure to be a tight game while UCD and Cork will meet at the Belfield Bowl with both teams having to commit themselves fully. Even after Saturday’s final series the fourth and final team may not be known as Cork will still have two back matches to fulfil. It’s not possible either at this stage to predict who will finish third. There’s bound to be a lot of hoping and praying in the meantime!

Rovers’ chances of qualifying though took an early knock in the game against UCD at Tallaght Stadium after Darragh O’Connor gave his side the lead. The Students were pegged back to level terms though after Richie Purdy equalised for the Hoops with a header from a corner to make it 1-1 at half time. Ben Hanrahan struck in the second half with a strike from inside the 18-yard box and Dylan Kavanagh almost scored after he hit the post. Cian Kavanagh made certain though after that with a tap in to finish the game 3-1.

The win didn’t come without a price for the Hoops though with centre half Lee Mitchell colliding with the goalpost almost on the stroke of half time and having to be taken to hospital. Mitchell was suspected of having suffered an injury to his right knee and was awaiting the results of a scan later in the night. Reports have since indicated that Mitchell is ok.

Given the importance of the game against Mervue this Saturday all Hoops fans are urged to come along and support the Young Hoops.
