Aaron Greene

The 110th Leinster Senior Cup Final was billed as the battle of Ringsend and it was Ken Oman who lifted the trophy after a hard fought game in which the decisive goal was scored by Aaron Greene with 7 minutes remaining.

On a mild and calm evening the game started slowly and there was nine minutes on the clock before Billy Dennehys low cross was missed by 'keeper O'Connor but the ball went across the CY goal. A minute later Gary O'Neill slipped the ball in for Aaron Greene on the left hand side of the box but this time O'Connor advanced to make a fine save.

Rovers had all the possession but a hard working CY team made it difficult for the Hoops to get behind the CY defence. Mark Roche raided down the left for CY in the 28th minute and his low cross was hooked to safety at the back post by Gilbert. Three minutes later a free-kick by Gary O'Connor was met by the head of Aidan Roche but his effort went over the bar.

On 33 minutes a Dennehy cross found O'Neill at the back post but he just failed to get his header on target. Andrew Doolin denied Gilberts run into the box on 35 minutes and three minutes later a Kavanagh low shot from the right couldn't beat 'keeper O'Connor at this near post. Just before half-time a Ken Oman clearance saw Greene race down the right-hand side and into the box but his low shot was saved by O'Connor.

Thankfully the second-half had a lot more incident and on 51 minutes Dennehy found sub Dean Ebbe on the right and his fine low cross into the area saw Greene attack the ball but he couldn't get enough contact to worry O'Connor. O'Neill then had a shot saved and Ebbe fired wide from the right-hand side of the box. Just before the hour a good run by O'Neill forced a corner but Ebbe headed wide from Dennehys cross.

Rovers should have taken the lead on 70 minutes when Dennehys ball found Greene on the right and his low cross beat the 'keeper but Dean Ebbe stretched to make contact but knocked the ball over the bar. Five minutes later a free-kick bt Dennehy from 25 yards out forced O'Connor into a diving save. Sean Gannon then tried his luck from distance but the ball cannoned off the crossbar.

Substiture Thomas Dunne forced Pieterse into a save with his shot from outside the box on 79 minutes and two minutes later Dean Ebbe missed a glorious chance when Dennehy beat the right full-back to cross low into the box but the Rovers number 9 steered the ball wide from close range.

ball5[GOAL 1:0 - 83rd min.] Rovers finally broke the deadlock when Dennehy found Greene in space on the right-hand side of the box and he controlled the ball before shooting low across the 'keeper and into the far corner of the net.

St Pats CY pushed men forward and in the 85th minute a shot from a central position just outside the box by Alan Murphy needed Pieterse to stretch to tip the ball over the bar. Rovers had the final chance of the game in the three minutes of added-on time as O'Neill forced O'Connor into a fine save with a shot from just inside the box.
