gartland-graham Graham Gartland - On target from the spot...

The Reds of Cliftonville came from two goals down to bring the tie into extra-time and the Hoops finally won the game 3-1 on penalties. Chris Turner hit the crossbar and Killian Brennan was denied twice by the upright in a lively cup-tie.

The Reds had an early chance when Donnelly made space for himself on the edge of the area but his shot went narrowly wide. Chris Turner was lively for Rovers in midfield and he saw his shot blocked in the box on 12 minutes. The Hoops had their first real chance on 16 minutes when Turner and Powel combined to find Kavanagh in the box but his shot on the turn went over the bar.

Rovers again threatened on 21 minutes when Turners shot forced 'keepr Brown into a decent save and a minute later Brennan couldn't find the target with a free-kick outside the box on the left. Caldwell's volley was straight at Jansson on 28 minutes and 4 minutes later a good punch by Brown cleared the ball as Dennehy threatened from Gannons cross.

ball5[GOAL 1:0 - 45th min.] The home side raised their game in the last 10 minutes of the half and Donnelly pounced on a stray pass to beat Gannon on the lefty and cross to the back post for Barry Johnston to head past Jansson.

Five minutes into the restart Jansson had to be quick off his line to clear as Scannell tried to get the better of Hawkins. The introduction of Ronan Finn added some impetus to Rovers game and they began to put pressure on the Reds goal. On 64 minutes some great play from Dennehy saw him cross for Turner to powerfully head on goal but the ball crashed off the crossbar. A minute later Finn played O'Neill in on goal but the Hoops striker clipped the ball past Brown and also past the left-hand post. A Conor McCormack shot then forced Brown to parry the ball away.

The home side survived the Hoops pressure and went looking for a second goal and once again Jansson was quick off his line to clear as Scannell chased a through ball. Turner then shot just over the bar before the Reds O'Carroll forced Jansson to dive low to save a shot. The Hoops 'keeper again denied O'Carroll with five minutes remaining this time superbly blocking his shot in the box.

ball5[GOAL 2:0 - 86th min.] With four minutes remaining Caldwell whipped in a fine cross for substitute Gormley to head powerfully into the corner of the net.

As the game headed for extra-time Killian Brennan almost won it for Rovers when his curling shot from the edge of the box beat Brown but hit the right hand upright.

The game really opened up in extra-time and Rovers had a number of opportunities especially from Finn and a Twigg header across goal. With 102 minutes on the clock Brennan received a pass on the left just outside the box and his shot on the turn again beat Brown but this time hit the underside of the crossbar. Dennehy then volleyed just over the bar and Brennan forced Brown to stretch himself to tip away his curling shot.

Cliftonville hit back in the second period of extra-time with Jansson saving at the feet of the Garrett but Gary Twigg had a header saved by Brown. With two minutes remaining Gormley met O'Carroll's cross in front of goal but his touch took the ball just over the bar.

And so to penalties and Oscar Jansson dived to his right to save Caldwells kick as Dennehy just about squeezed the ball under Browns body. Gormley scored but Turner also found the net with his kick. Jansson then kept out Donnelly's kick and Gartland stepped up to make it 3-1. The final penalty saw O'Carroll hit the woodwork and Rovers progressed to the semi-final.
