Billy Dennehy Billy Dennehy - scored from the spot

A good workout for both teams on a cold evening in Tallaght saw Rovers score in each half to win the game.

The visitors had the first chance on goal in the 3rd minute when the Youths number 8 shot just wide of new signing Jansson's goal. The Hoops were finding space behind the Wexford defence and in the 15th minute O'Donnell played Kavanagh in but his first touch let him down and the ball was cleared. Two good Billy Dennehy corners three minutes later caused problems and defender Browne had to be alert to clear in front of goal as Hawkins threatened.

Furlong failed to hit the target with a header in front of goal on 19 minutes. On 21 minutes a Dennehy free-kick was headed back by Hawkins for King to shoot on goal but the ball crashed off the underside of the crossbar. Dennehy was involved in most of the Rovers attacks and his low cross on the half-hour saw Twigg beaten by a defender to the ball in front of goal. The resultant corner saw the Scotsman meet the ball but Browne blocked his effort.

Rovers finally broke the deadlock two minutes before the break when a fine Dennehy cross from the left was met with a powerful looping header from Gary Twigg that gave 'keeper Doyle no chance.

Wexford made a number of changes at the break while Rovers gave new signing Kerrea Gilbert his pre-season home debut. Again the visitors went close early this time Nolan's diving header went just wide. On 53 minutes a fine turn and shot by Daryl Kavanagh saw the ball go narrowly wide.

Rovers made it 2-0 on 54 minutes when Kavanagh was taken down from behind following Twigg's deft pass. Billy Dennehy stepped up to shoot low into the left-hand corner of the net.

Dennehy's free-kick from 20 yards out was straight at the 'keeper on 62 minutes and then McCabe played Gilbert into the box on the right but his shot hit the side-netting.

In the 68th minute the visitors almost grabbed a spectacular goal when number 15 tried his luck from almost on the half-way line and Jansson was beaten but the ball cannoned off the cross-bar. The game remained competitive but there wasn't much more goalmouth action until the final ten minutes.

Conor Powell did well to deny Furlong a header on goal with 8 minutes remaining while at the other end Rovers almost made it three when Brennan played McCabe in on the right with a quickly taken free-kick and the 'keeper beat away his shot for Kavanagh to return the ball on goal but the 'keeper did well to keep the ball out at the second attempt.

With three minutes left McCabe again played the attacking Gilbert in on the right but again the Hoops number two hit the side-net. Brennan had the final chance of the game but he shot across goal from a tight angle.
