Gary Twigg
The Hoops inflicted a first home defeat on Sligo as the irrepressible Gary Twigg signed off his Rovers career with another brace of goals. It was a deserved victory in a packed Showgrounds as the locals celebrated as newly crowned League of Ireland champions.
On a cold night in Sligo the Hoops started the brighter of the two teams and knocked the ball around well in the early stages.
[GOAL 0:1 - 10th min.] Aaron Greene set up Conor Powell to cross into the Sligo box and Billy Dennehy couldn't get a touch but Gary Twigg met the cross with a volley that crashed off the crossbar. The Scotsman was then first to the rebound and he stuck out his leg to hook the ball over the static 'keeper and into the net for a fine opportunist goal.
On 18 minutes Twigg forced Rogers into a save with a shot from the left-hand side of the box. Aaoron Greene then just failed tp play the Hoops number nine in on goal before Billy Dennehy shot over the bar from 20 yards out.
Conor Powell was on hand to deny Millien a run on goal after 24 minutes and a minute later some good play by Dennehy setup McCabe to shoot from the right-hand side of the area but his effort went just over the bar. Joseph Ndo forced Jansson into his first save of the night with a shot from just outside the box on 29 minutes.
The second-half began with Rovers again dominating play and when Aaron Greene crossed to the back post Ken Oman went very close with a fine low shot across goal. On 51 minutes a cross by Lynch was well defended by Pat Sullivan under his own crossbar.
[GOAL 0:2 - 57th min.] A poor back pass was pounced on by Gary Twigg and he rounded Rogers to slot the ball home from a tight angle on the left-hand side of the box.
On 72 minutes a nice flick by Dennehy played the ball into the path of Gary McCabe inside the box and he forced Rogers into a good blocking save.
The home side couldn't get into the game and the Hoops were always in control and substitute Dean Ebbe almost set up McCabe in the box when he was released down the right-hand side in added-on time. The final whistle drew an end to a disappointing season with all eyes now on the close season and the appointment of a new Manager.
