Hoops Line out
An emotional night for Gary Twigg as he finished as he started with Rovers in Tallaght Stadium finding the net twice in two minutes to set the Hoops up for a win. The Students played their part in an open game and pressed hard for an equaliser but the Hoops took the points and gave the Scotsman a rousing send-off at the end of the game.
The opening 15 minutes of the game were pretty uneventful and it looked like being just another sterile end of season game. However a goal fest in a four minute spell changed that.
On 26 minutes a good cross from Aaron Greene found Twiff at the back post but he headed narrowly wide. McCabe set up Billy Dennehy for a shot on goal after 33 minutes but 'keeper Barron got down well to save. It should have been 3-1 to Rovers on 37 minutes when McCabe beat the right-full and picked out Twigg with a fine cross but the Scotsman volleyed wide from a central position.
After 42 minutes McCabe found Sullivan with a great pass and the Hoops right-full sent the ball across goal but no Hoops player could get the vital touch. Greene sent in two late crosses that caused problems but the UCD defence stood firm.
The Students started the second-half better and Samir Belhout went close with a deflected shot from just inside the box on 52 minutes. Oscar Jansson received a booking when he collided with McMillan just outside the box but the visitors wasted the free-kick.
On 64 minutes a Dennehy low pass almost got Twigg in on goal but Barron advanced to claim the ball. On 77 minutes two Dennehy corners in quick succession caused problems for the Students defence while three minutes later a McCabe free-kick into the box saw Stephen Rice just fail to make contact with the ball.
The Students best chance to equalise came with five minutes remaining when McMillan spotted Jansson off his line and his attempted lob brought a fine one-handed save from the Hoops 'keeper. There was another scare for Rovers right at the death when Benson's shot from outside the area just missed the target.
The final whistle saw the Hoops faithful give a rousing send-off to the scorer of the first ever goal at Tallaght Stadium as well as many vital and memorable goals throughout his four season stint with Rovers.
