Gary McCabe- superb 2nd goal for Rovers
The Hoops came from a goal down to claim all three points in Turners Cross. A fine Ronan Finn strike from the edge of the box cancelled out Turners early opener and a stunning free-kick in the 2nd half from Gary McCabe gave Rovers a well deserved win.
On a calm and warm evening on Leeside the Hoops opened brightly but received a setback after only 4 minutes.
Rovers set about looking for the equaliser and Billy Dennehy delivered a good cross but Kilduff couldn't get his head to the ball. Ronan Finn then turned into the area on the left but shot low straight at 'keeper Burns. On 12 minutes Dennehy again got to the bye-line to cross low into the six-yard area but Kilduff couldn't get the vital touch on the ball. A minute later Dennehy again crossed and Pat Sullivan found himself in space on the right-hand side of the box but his attempted lob went over the bar.
Rovers continued to dominate and won six corners in the first 20 minutes. On 23 minutes Billy Dennehy shot low from just outside the box but the 'keeper saved easily. The same player then tried his luck from a free-kick 25 yards out on the right but Burns got down well to push his shot away. The home side had a chance to extend their lead on 26 minutes when Horgan glanced a header wide in front of goal.
On the half-hour Finn was in the action when his shot from just outside the box was saved by Burns. Rovers were still on top but could have been two behind on 40 minutes when Parker found himself onside behind the Hoops defence and although Jansson made a fine stop from his initial volley the ball found its way back to the Englishman but he hooked the ball over the bar in front o goal.
Rovers started the second-half in thesame vein and early shots from McCabe and Stewart set the tone for a half that the Hoops dominated. Dennehy and Stewart combined on 52 minutes for Finn to force Burns into a good save with a shot. Finn then crossed for Kilduff but he couldn't guide his header on target.
The home side tried to respond and Jansson had to race from his line to clear as Corks number 30 raced on to a through ball. A great cross from Dennehy on the left saw Kilduff rise at the back post but his header went across goal. Jansson then made a good claim from Horgans cross into the box.
McCabe raided down the right and into the Cork box on 75 minutes but his low cross was well defended and a minute later Stewart forced Burns to save his long range effort.
Rovers never allowd the hosts to get back into the game and when Dan Murray was pushed up front Colin Hawkins and Craig Sives made sure he was ineffective. After three minutes of added-on time the Ref. blew his whistle and Rovers deservedly claimed the three points.
