Thomas Stewart - two goals for Rovers
Tommy Stewart was sprung from the bench on 68 minutes and within a minute he had given the Hoops the lead with his first touch. Seven minutes later he wrapped up the game with a spectacular 30 yard shot.
On a miserable wet evening in Tallaght Stadium an early Craig Sives slip allowed Vinny Sullivan to turn in the box but Oscar Jansson was alert and advanced to block his effort. Rovers couldn't inject a fast tempo into the game and the visitors were happy to get men behind the ball and this led to an overall lifeless first period.
Ronan Finn forced Cork 'keeper McNulty into a fairly comfortable save on 15 minutes with a low drive while at the other end Daryl Horgan beat Powell to cross into the box but Colin Hawkins was on hand to clear. On 27 minutes McNulty dropped McCabe's high ball into the area but he recovered before Rovers could take advantage.
Corks number six Gearoid Morrissey was impressive in midfield and he shot just over Jansson's crossbar on 28 minutes. Gary McCabe then fired a free-kick not far wide from outside the area. Rovers best chance of the half came on 36 minutes when Kilduff fed Turner who set up Gilbert to cross into the area but Captain Gary Twigg, in front of goal, couldn't get his header on target.
Morrissey again tried his luck from outside the area but his low shot went wide. A good break by the Leesiders just before the break saw O'Neill shoot inside the box but Jansson got down well to save.
Rovers started the second-half on the front foot and Ronan Finn was narrowly wide with a fine shot after good bulid-up play from Turner and Twigg. Chris Turner then tried his luck from distance on 51 minutes and McNulty had to stretch to tip the ball over the bar.
The visitors had a decent spell ten minutes into the second-half with the hard working Daryl Horgan finding O'Neill in space on the left hand side of the box but his shot was weak and Jansson saved easily. A minute later however O'Neill returned the favour and found Horgan in space in the box with a cross but the Cork number 23 had to stretch to make contact and fortunately for Rovers he knocked tha ball over the bar. Jansson was then forced to save at his near post from O'Neill's low shot on the left.
Gary McCabe forced a save from McNulty with a shot from outside the box before Horgan ran at the Hoops defence but couldn't get his shot on target.
Rovers should have made it three just two minutes later when Gilbert's low cross found Twigg in the box and his shot on the turn went narrowly wide.
Cork pushed men forward in the last ten minutes but couldn't breach the Hoops defence and Rovers progressed to the quarter-finals of the FAI Ford Cup.
