Billy Dennehy Billy Dennehy.. hat-trick hero

Rovers hit the Students for six for a third time this season as a professional display saw the Hoops claim a quarter-final place in the FAI Ford Cup. Billy Dennehy took home the match ball following his hat-trick as the Students were made to play with ten men for over an hour.

It didn't take Rovers long to begin the rout as a long ball from Sullivan was headed on by Kilduff for Dennehy to try flick the ball over defender Leahy but his outstretched hand made contact with the ball and the Ref. awarded a penalty.

The Kerryman took the spot-kick himself but 'keeper Barron got down well to pary the shot and fortunately the ball fell for Billy again and this time he found the net.

Rovers continued to dominate with McCabe and Finn causing problems for the Students defence and on 19 minutes Chris Turner met Dennehy's corner to head powerfully into the net for the second goal.

Pat Sullivan made a good defensive tackle to deny Belhout a shot on goal after 22 minutes and a Rovers counter-attack saw McCabe put Kilduff in on the right but his shot was easily saved.

Ronan Finn played a great ball to Kilduff on 26 minutes and his low cross was played invitingly in front of O'Neill inside the area but Leahy pulled him back and received his marching orders and also conceded a penalty.

Gary McCabe's powerful shot saw Barron get a hand to the ball but he couldn't keep it out. Rovers were 3 up.

On 30 minutes Creevy saw his header saved by Brush under his crossbar and a minute later Dennehy crossed from the left and Ciaran Kilduff headed wide in front of goal.

On 35 minutes Richard Brush made an outstanding save to deny Corry's shot from 25 yards out. Turner blasted over the bar from a tight angle on 39 minutes but three minutes later the Hoops grabbed a fourth when Gannon's lob from the edge of the area was brilliantly touched on to the crossbar by Barron but Dennehy followed up to smash home the rebound.

Rovers continued to play at a high tempo in the second-half and Finn saw Barron save his shot from the edge of the area. Billy Dennehy then almost broke the crossbar in two with a ferocious effort from 25 yards.

The impressive Sean Gannon then fired in a fine cross from the right but Barron punched away under pressure from Kilduff. Gary McCabe then shot wide from Dennehy's deep cross.

A good move from the Students on 62 minutes put O'Connor in on goal but the ever alert Brush raced from his line to block.

Billy Dennehy completed his hat-trick on in the 71st minute when substitute Paddy Kavanagh crossed from the right and the ball fell to the Hoops number 20 and he fired home in front of goal.

Darren Meenan then forced Brush to save well from 20 yards while at the other end the hard-working Finn forced Barron to do likewise.

Rovers got their sixth in the first minute of added-on time when Paddy Kavanagh's deep cross saw Gary O'Neill head in at the back post.
