Thomas Stewart Likes scoring in Richmond Park...
The Saints may have got off to a perfect start but it was the Hoops who finished with all the points in Richmond Park.
Pete Mahon had claimed it was a win or bust for Pats and he must have been delighted as a second minute corner saw Ryan Guy rise unopposed to head home.
The early setback was a shock for Rovers but the home side failed to press home their early advantage and Rovers gradually got into the game and Dennehy’s corner on 12 minutes was headed over the bar by player of the month for August Aidan Price.
Danny Murphy’s angled pass just failed to see Stewart connect in the box on 15 minutes but the game became scrappy with little goalmouth action at either end until Alan Mannus was called upon to save a shot at the second attempt on 31 minutes.
On 34 minutes a long throw-in by Rice saw Sives return the ball into the box but Twigg couldn’t get his head on the ball. On 40 minutes another long throw-in by Rice was flicked on and Twigg just failed to force the ball on target.
The Hoops were level on 45 minutes when Twigg initially won a free-kick for Chambers to cross into the area and Sives powered a header past Rogers but it hit the butt of the post and Twigg was lighting quick to pounce on the rebound to shoot into the roof of the net.
The start of the second-half was also scrappy but Rovers showed more intent going forward. It took a magnificent challenge by Sives to deny Bermingham a shot on goal on 51 minutes after the ex-Hoop raced on to a through ball.
Rovers went ahead in the 56th minute when Dennehy’s low cross saw Mulcahy fluff his clearance and Stewart pounced on the error to shoot into the corner of the net.
The home side hit back but Twigg headed a Cash corner clear on 58 minutes but the game was put beyond the Saints when Bradley availed of another error to slide the ball into the path of Billy Dennehy and the Kerry man rifled an unstoppable shot past Rogers for Rovers third.
The large Hoops support was in a buoyant mood now and the Saints tried to get back into the game but to no avail. Alan Mannus was called upon to save a shot from O’Brien on 75 minutes and again in the 80th minute when Cash shot low from inside the box.
Thomas Stewart had a great chance in the 82nd minute when he raced into the area to poke the ball just inches wide of Rogers goal and right at the death Faherty saw his fine shot pushed over the bar by Mannus as Rovers comfortably held out to maintain their seven point lead at the summit of the table.
