James Chambers Dessie Baker
hit the cross-bar..

An overall disappointing Dublin Derby that nevertheless produced a pulsating last ten minutes in which time the Hoops could have stole all the points. A grey damp afternoon kick-off saw both sides play conservatively in the opening half.

On 8 minutes Robert Bayly found lone striker Tommy Stewart who knocked the ball down for Chambers to shoot and win a corner. Ex-Hoop Barry Murphy needed two attempts to claim the greasy ball. Stewart then turned well 2 minutes later but saw his shot blocked.

Rovers enjoyed the majority of the early play with the home side winning their first corner in the 21st minute that saw the ball cleared for Byrne to return a low cross but Alan Mannus got down well to save.

On the half-hour Captain Dan Murray got a good defensive header on a Brennan free-kick and James Chambers defended another free-kick from the Bohs number eleven. It was Brennan’s cross that led to the first real chance when the ball fell to Quigley in the box but Mannus did enough to block his shot.

A minute before the break a slip by Sives saw Quigley feed Byrne in the box but his shot didn’t trouble the Hoops goal.

Two minutes into the restart a Chambers ball saw Stewart run into the box but Murphy advanced to clear with his feet. McGuinness then cut out a Murphy pass that almost reached Stewart.

The home side began to see more of the ball and Mannus took a low cross from Quigley on 56 minutes. On the hour Mannus saved a header under his post after Pat Flynn conceded a free-kick outside the area.

The home side’s main threat was coming from Brennan’s set-pieces and on 65 minutes he swung a free-kick into the box that Byrne knocked down to Rossiter but his effort was deflected by Chambers just over the bar.

Chambers free-kick was on target on 67 minutes but didn’t trouble Murphy too much. On 71 minutes a Bohs corner was partially cleared by substitute Turner but Brennan was first to the ball and Mannus was well placed to save. The same player then shot over the bar from Byrnes lay-off.

With ten minutes remaining the Hoops finally tested the home defence. Great play by Baker set-up Flynn to cross low back to Baker in front of goal and the Hoops substitute saw his shot deflected onto the cross-bar. The rebound fell to Stewart but his shot was blocked and O’Connor couldn’t get another shot in on goal.

On 85 minutes a Murphy throw-in saw O’Connor fire in a fine cross that saw McGuinness knock the ball into the path of Stewart and his shot cannoned off a Bohs defender to safety but their was a huge shout for a handball in the area.

Rovers were completely on top now and a Baker corner on 88 minutes was just missed by Sives. A minute later following another corner the ball fell to Baker in the box but his goal bound effort was blocked by the head of Anto Murphy.

Good defensive play by Murray in added-on time saw O’Connor race away with the ball but he was unceremoniously taken out by Cronin’s tackle and he was lucky only to see a yellow card brandished by Referee McKeown.

In the third minute of added-on time a Danny Murphy cross fell to Turner at the back post and his volley was heading into the net but Barry Murphy got across his goal to push the shot over the bar.
