James Chambers opened the scoring..
A fine week’s work in College saw the Hoops take all three points in tonight’s Airtricity League encounter to follow up their cup win on Monday. Gary Twigg took the honours with another goal, this time late on, to add to James Chambers fine opening strike to leave the large contingent of Hoops fans happy as they left Belfield.
A shower of rain just before kick-off made for a slippy surface but the Hoops were bright from the start and a Chambers corner in the 2nd minute saw Twigg connect with the ball but he guided his effort wide. However the 8th minute saw Bradley fouled just outside the box and Chambers stepped up to fire the free-kick around the wall to beat Brennan and open the scoring for Rovers.
The Students reacted well and Alan Mannus got down to save McMillan’s header but he was powerless to prevent Paul Corry’s deflected shot in the 15th minute entering the net to level the game.
Billy Dennehy was working hard on the left and his cross was well defended in the 17th minute to deny Twigg a chance. Chris Turner then sent a shot from distance just over the cross-bar. Pat Flynn blocked a shot from Wilson after a fine counter attack from the Students.
The home side continued to trouble the Hoops defence and on 25 minutes a good header by Murray relieved the danger but from the corner McMillan again was on target but Mannus dived to his left to save.
Dennehy chased a through ball from Turner but his first time cross was well claimed by Brennan in the UCD goal. Kavanagh went close in the 36th minute with a shot from the edge of the area following a good interchange between Twigg and Dennehy.
The home side kept up the pressure and the impressive Danny Murphy made a decisive header from a corner in the 39th minute. Billy Dennehy ended the half with a fine run but he scooped his shot over the bar.
Seven minutes into the second period a great passing movement involving Flynn, Chambers and Twigg saw the Hoops number eight cross low past Brennan and Dennehy was agonisingly close to connecting with the ball in front of goal.
A minute later Craig Sives used his strength to deny Kilduff a shooting chance inside the area. On 66 minutes a Bradley corner was met by Turner and his downward header was destined to hit the net but Brennan reacted well to push the ball over the bar.
With 15 minutes remaining a Corry shot skidded off the greasy surface but Mannus claimed the ball at the second attempt. Substitute Thomas Stewart made an impression in the 85th minute when his run down the left saw him cross to the back post but a defender got there to deny O’Connor a chance.
A minute later the Hoops snatched the lead when Flynn’s ball was headed on by Baker and Twigg was quickest to react to get behind the home defence and the Scotsman smashed the ball past Brennan to the delight of the Hoops fans.
The Students never gave up and in the 2nd minute of added on time UCD’s Shortall pounced on a loose ball and fired a first-time shot that ‘keeper Mannus was relieved to see go just over the bar.
