Gary Twigg 10th minute goal for Rovers
Michael O’Neill played a strong side in Belfield and a lone goal from Gary Twigg was enough to see the Hoops through to the next round. The Hoops dominated most of the play but survived a late scare that would have forced extra time.
The goal came on 10 minutes and Danny Murphy’s persistence paid off when he won the ball just over the half-way line despite the presence of two UCD players to run forward and find Gary Twigg with a fine cross that the Scotsman dispatched to the net with a header.
Dan Murray shot over the bar five minutes later before an O’Connor cross needed a defensive header to deny Chambers a chance. Rovers had plenty of possession without creating too many openings while the Students registered their first real chance on 37 minutes when Doyle failed to convert a cross to the back post.
The last chance of the half fell to Bayly but his shot just cleared the cross-bar following good work by Paddy Kavanagh.
The second-half saw Rovers continue to dominate possession of the ball and a good move saw Chambers and Twigg combine at the edge of the box but a defender blocked Twigg’s shot.
On 57 minutes a deep Danny Murphy cross was met at the back post by Chambers but he couldn’t direct his header on goal. Just before the hour a short back pass by Flynn saw the ball fall to UCD's Rusk and Mannus was relieved to push away his shot for a corner.
On 70 minutes a Bradley corner was met by the glancing header of Craig Sives but the ball went narrowly wide of the far post. The Students had a glorious chance to equalise on 78 minutes when a break into the Hoops box saw a cross beat Mannus but the UCD number 12 dived to head the ball off the post and wide.
Bradley set-up Baker to shoot low across goal on 80 minutes and four minutes later Stewart set-up Kavanagh to shoot inside the area but a defender blocked his effort on goal.
The game had entered added-on time when a free-kick into the area wasn’t dealt with and in the ensuing scramble a UCD boot diverted the ball past Mannus but luckily Sives was on hand to clear off the line.
