Rovers did just enough to defeat a talented Wexford Youths side who came close to forcing extra-time after a spirited fight back from two goals down. The Hoops had the majority of possession in the first half and Billy Dennehy was involved in a lot of the Rovers attacking play.
His cross on 7 mins was headed just wide by Chambers in front of goal and on 15 mins a cross by Ollie Cahill saw Barrett’s header saved by Holden. Sean O’Connor couldn’t meet a decent cross by Stevens on 24 mins while at the other end a rare attack by the visitors saw Murray defend a good free-kick by Dean Broaders.
Graham Barrett glanced a header just wide from Bradley’s free-kick before the Hoops took the lead in the 36th minute when Chambers split the visitors defence to find Dennehy on the right and his cross was met by the diving header of Cahill in front of goal.
Sean O’Connor saw his shot deflect off Wolfe in the Wexford defence and the ball hit the crossbar and went over. On 41 mins the Youths had a chance to equalise when Sheehan burst through the Hoops defence but Mannus advanced to block his shot.
The second half saw more pressure from Rovers and Dennehy’s cross fell to Chambers but he shot wide. However a minute later Sheehan put Keohane in on goal and Mannus once again was on hand to block the shot.
Rovers went two up following an O’Connor corner as the ball fell to Dennehy inside the box and the Kerryman hooked his shot into the top left-hand corner of the net.
Bradley and O’Connor combined to set up Barrett but he couldn’t get a shot on goal. It looked like Rovers would win comfortably but the visitors struck on 75 mins when Sheehan broke down the right to cross for Furlong to score from close range.
A minute later Baker setup O’Connor but he shot straight at Holden. With 8 minutes remaining a cross by Russell was met by Sheehan but his shot on the turn looped just over the Hoops goal.
In the 90th minute a shot by Sheehan was fumbled by Mannus and Furlong somehow failed to get a decisive touch in front of goal to equalise. The 4th minute of added-on time saw Dennehy race clear of the advanced Wexford defence but he side-footed the ball wide of goal with only the ‘keeper to beat.
