An historic night in Tallaght as the Hoops hosted their original Ringsend rivals in the first ever pre-season friendly on Whitestown Way. Also on show tonight was Rovers new signing Dan Murray who made a welcome debut in the second half. The visitors included a host of ex-Rovers players from the successful 2006 first division campaign.
Hoops number 11
A good crowd was present on a chilly evening to see two committed sides go through a very usful workout a full four weeks before the season starts.
The Hoops played an expansive game and utilised the big Tallaght pitch but the visitors worked hard to close down the play. On eleven minutes the home side opened the scoring when Ollie Cahill flicked the ball to Bradley who found Edwards in space and he fired a low shot past Delaney in the Shels goal.
However a couple of minutes later a good turn by Cassidy in the box made space for the ex-Rovers player to lob a shot over Mannus but the ball hit the top of the cross-bar.
Pat Flynn played a fine through ball to Chambers in the 20th minute but Ian Ryan made a fine intercepting tackle. Some great skill by Kavanagh in the 27th minute almost set up a chance for the Hoops.
On 37 minutes a fine ball from the hard working Chambers set up Edwards but again Ryan came to the Reds rescue.
The resultant corner was headed against the cross-bar by Sives and another corner saw Twigg's glancing header go narrowly wide.
Some good covering defending just before the break saw Cahill get back to deny Quigley's run into the box.
The many changes made by both sides in the second period led to a paucity of goalmouth action but the visitors continued to work hard and Rovers had to match the work rate. The introduction of Don Cowen in the 62nd minute livened up proceedings. Chambers sent in a good in-swinging free kick on 61 minutes and followed this up with a corner that Twigg just failed to connect with.
The lively Sean O’Connor went on a great run into the box on 71 minutes and his cross was met by Cowen but he couldn’t direct his header on target.
Substitute Walsh turned and crossed well on 81 minutes but defender Whelan got there ahead of Cowen. The Hoops had a chance to double the lead right on the blow when Williams fumbled an O’Connor free kick and Sives knocked the ball back across goal for Cahill to head towards goal but the ball was cleared.
