A disappointing night for the Hoops on Leeside as they matched the home side for long periods but succumbed to a first half Behan header. Rovers were composed from the start and a good move in the 9th minute saw Ger O'Brien cross well but Devine was quick to claim the ball. Purcell then knocked the ball down for Cassidy to shoot on 12 minutes but the 'keeper was well placed to save. An overhead kick that sailed over Stephen O'Briens goal was Cork's only effort on goal after 15 minutes.
Rovers best chance of the half came when Martins first time cross was met by Rowe but Devine got down well to deny the Hoops number ten. Danny O'Connor was back in central defence and his header on 24 minutes enabled O'Brien to claim a dangerous cross. Purcell tracked Cork's central defender Murray as he tried to breach the Hoops defence on 26 minutes and just a minute later was back up the other end to shoot wide when well placed on the edge of the area.
Having had the best of the game so far the Hoops went behind in the 34th minute when Kearney's cross to the back post beat Clarke and Behan rose to head the ball under the dive of O'Brien and into the net. Cassidys free-kick in the 42nd minute was missed by Purcell but Devine was alert to save as the ball curled towards goal.
The second half was a very tight affair but Reynolds done well on 51 minutes to set up Purcell who crossed for Rowe but his shot was deflected for a corner. Ger O'Brien made a good defensive header at the back post on 56 minutes. Behan then headed over from Farrellys corner on 62 minutes.
Rovers were working hard but were finding it difficult to get behind the home defence but Cassidy almost got Purcell away on 67 minutes but Murray got back to clear. Myler replaced Reynolds with 15 minutes remaining as Rovers pushed for an equaliser and they had a golden opportunity in the 80th minute. Cassidy knocked the ball forward and Purcell neatly headed the ball into space on the right hand side of the box to set himself up for a shot but he fired the ball wide of Devine's right hand post.
The home side hit back and forced Rovers onto the back foot and from a corner they almost grabbed a second goal with a shot from the edge of the area. Ferguson made a vital interception to cut out a through ball and O'Brien had to race from his line to to deny a shooting chance.
In the 90th minute Ger Rowe latched on to a pass and with the goal in his sights tried his luck first time but Devine was well placed to save and deny the Hoops the chance of salvaging a point.
