Sligo 3 - 5 Rovers
eircom National League Premier Division
Saturday 11th December 1999
Showgrounds, Sligo k.o. 7.30pm
A dramatic and stormy encounter ended with 8 goals, 3 players and 1 manager sent off and a hat-trick of goals for Padraig Moran, who ended up on the losing side. It all started so well for the western Rovers, Moran getting his opening 2 goals in the 5th and 35th minutes to give Sligo a 2-0 lead. However, a goal from Jason Colwell just before half-time gave Rovers hope and a superb headed goal from Graham Lawlor just after half-time levelled the score.
Sligo, who were down to 10 men at this stage, edged ahead in the 61st minute but Richie Purdy soon brought the Hoops back on terms. Marc Kenny and Sligo's Flannery were both red-carded after a fracas in the centre circle. Sligo's manager, Tommy Cassidy, was also sent off.
The ten Rovers men then went ahead for the first time in the game when Shane Robinson scored in the 79th minute. Sean Francis then wrapped up the game with a goal three minutes later but it seemed that Lawlor had kicked the ball out of the goalkeepers' hands just before the goal. This much needed win takes Rovers back into 3rd place in the league.
