Along with Rovers CPO, Paddy McQuaid, many first team players visit St Aidan’s to coach the youths. But football is only one aspect of the programme; the students’ academic achievements and behaviour are also monitored in order for them to be selected for the scholarship programme. Shamrock Rovers also runs a scholarship scheme in association with the IT Tallaght. Students who play for a Shamrock Rovers team are eligible for the bursary, and a group is chosen each year to receive the funding to help them through their college year. As well as measuring their football achievements, the players also have to be successful in their studies. The club intends to roll these scholarship schemes out to other schools in the area in the coming years. The scholarship in St Aidan’s was featured in an Irish Times article, which can be found here. |
