After a day of incessant rain the Tolka Park pitch was in remarkably good condition if a little wet underfoot. This had an affect on a fairly scrappy opening 20 minutes in which neither side could retain possession or create any real chances. A couple of low crosses for either side was the net outcome of this period with the slippery ball ensuring Robbie Shields couldn't get a strike on goal on 12 minutes.
O'Connor then tried his luck from 25 yards in the 26th minute but Gough wasn't troubled. Purcell went on a mazy run that got him right into the Galway box but he over ran the ball and the chance was lost. The game began to open up a bit and a stunning volley from Cassedy from all of 25 yards was equally brilliantly tipped around the post by Gough. Robiie Shields then shot weakly at Gough after 38 minutes. The Tribesmen struck back immediately and the Hoops defence were relieved to see a dangerous low cross go right across goal to safety.
Right on the blow for half-time a great turn by Duffy saw him put Purcell through on the right but the Hoops number 10 shot straight at Gough. Gough then failed to gather a through ball and Duffy crossed for O'Connor but his shot was blocked.
Rovers got a wake up call right from the tip off for the second period. A Galway attack saw Murphy crash a shot off the cross-bar and the ball fell to a Galway attacker but he incredibly scythed his shot past the post. Rovers responded well and a great run from Cooney saw O'Connor in on the left but Gough saved his shot with his feet. O'Connor then had a free-kick from the edge of the area but again Gough was on hand to save.
Willie Doyle entered the fray on 68 minutes and just 5 minutes later he met a good Duffy cross but saw his header beat Gough and crash off the cross-bar. Price was then on hand to block an effort from the Galway number 15.
The Hoops pushed on for the last 10 minutes and another Duffy cross was met by Purcell but he shot wide under pressure. Doyle the burst into the area but his low cross went just behind Purcell. A Galway free-kick caused problems for the Hoops defence in the 84th minute but the ball was finally scrambled away.
Rovers wasted a couple of free-kicks from dangerous positions as the game drew to a close but there was one chance left when Duffy whipped in a free-kick that Purcell flicked on and Doyle just failed to direct the ball on goal from close range.
