Ballbofey - Friday 14th November 2008 - ko 7.35pm Rovers fall in foul weather... The season ended for Rovers with a defeat to struggling Finn Harps. The game was played in atrocious conditions in Ballybofey with incessant rain and a swirling breeze. The pitch cut up badly very early which didn't help the players. However Harps set about their task of securing a win to keep their hopes of staying up in the Premier Division and caused Barry Murphy some problems with long range shots early in the game. Purcell couldn't direct his header on goal after 25 minutes in a rare Hoops foray into the Harps box. Murphy then made a fabulous save from Breens sweetly struck free-kick on 26 minutes. Padraig Amond shot over the bar from a tight angle after 29 minutes. Harps looked the more likely to score and on the half hour the goal arrived when Simon Madden inadvertently knocked a corner back across goal and Mukendi took advantage to shoot low past Murphy through a number of defenders. Gethins ran clear of the Rovers defence five minutes later but Murphy advanced to save well. The home side extended their lead on 39 minutes when Pat Flynn slipped while trying to clear and Gethins pounced to score. Harps could have added to their score in the second half but thanks to some fine goalkeeping by the Hoops number one and some erratic finishing the score stayed at 2-0. Rovers almost grabbed a consolation goal in the 89th minute but Amond couldn't force the ball home during a goalmouth scramble. |
