Fine first-half display undone by Guys hat-trick...
Rovers post-Scully era began with a defeat but there was some good elements to the Hoops overall play in an entertaining Dublin derby. Sean O'Connor starting in his more accustomed left-hand side position began brightly and his 8th minute free-kick was headed wide by Amond. A minute later after a good run by Martin, O'Connor whipped in a corner for Price to head over. Guy set-up Quigley on 13 minutes but Murphy saved his shot with his legs. O'Brien headed the resultant corner just wide for Pats.
The game came alive on 20 minutes when Doyle turned well and fed Sean O'Connor who sent Amond in on the left for the Carlow man to cross for John Martin to fire in a shot that deflected off Lynch into the back of the net. Right from the kick-off it was Eoin Doyle who broke with the ball to send a shot just wide. A good move from Pats on 29 mins ended with Dempsey shooting but Murphy got down well to save.
A good flick from Amond almost sent Doyle in on goal before Fahey began a move that saw Quigley head over inside the box. On 34 minutes the visitors went close with an O'Brien shot but a minute later Padraig Amond's spectacular volley from 25 yards just cleared the crossbar. Ger O'Brien almost put Doyle in on goal on 40 minutes but at the other end the Hoops number two lost possession but Maguire got back to made the clearance.
With just three minutes on the clock in the second-half a fine strike from Guy levelled the score. Just three minutes later a free-kick was knocked on by Amond but Sean O'Connor volleyed over the bar from close range. Kirby went close for Pats on 57 minutes when he got behind Madden but Murphy advanced to get a hand to the ball and clear the danger. A great run by John Martin saw him take the ball right into the box but two Pats defenders eventually cleared the danger.
On 70 minutes a fine corner from O'Connor was defended well by Lynch and two minutes later the visitors grabbed the lead when Guy was played into the area to fire his shot past Murphy and into the net. Doyle responded quickly to shoot well but Ryan was well placed to save. Rovers kept pressing and O'Connors corner saw Price rise but he couldn't direct his header on target.
After 77 minutes another Sean O'Connor corner saw Ryan in no-mans land but Rogers cleared the danger for Pats to break and Guy's shot was blocked by Murphy with Flynn clearing off his line only for Fahey to return the ball to Guy who headed past Murphy from close range.
The Hoops weren't finished just yet and Amond set-up Ger O'Brien just inside the box but unfortunately his shot cannoned off the crossbar. Harris shot just wide for Pats on 83 minutes before the final move of the game saw O'Brien cross for Amond to head into the side-netting.
